If you don’t know, Flash Flash Revolution (FFR) started off as an online rhythm game that was brought to light back in 2002 when other simulation based applications like DWI and Stepmania were popping off and became a fan favorite since online score tracking and rivalries seriously made the game that much different and more competitive. 15 years later and 1.9 million registered players later, FFR is still kicking and the team has just proudly released the R^3 Air Edition making the game completely flash free.

We spoke with site Administrator Max Proske last week before the R^3 Air Edition announcement to find out more. “R^3 Air Edition” is the same great game engine, built entirely without Flash. It achieves the highest, most stable frame rates ever recorded in FFR history. For players who once found the game unplayable, even on 30 FPS mode, they can expect an upwards of 240 FPS” says Max. FFR has a long-standing history of running poorly on modern computers, regardless of specifications due to the the performance/optimization limitations of Flash Player. The new edition of the game uses GPU rendering to achieve the highest, most stable frame rates ever recorded in FFR history (while Flash Player has an option for hardware acceleration, it still renders graphics through the CPU only). Local file caching where saving game levels locally to your hard drive greatly reduces load times for songs after the first play and now, all game play replays are auto-saved locally to the replay folder.

Don’t even bother asking about simfiles (we’re not about that life anymore). For FFR, the simfile database has not existed since 2009, and every single song in-game is used with permission and knowledge of the original artist.
